WHAT TO DO ABOUT HUNT HAVOC A few weeks ago we posted a video from the League Against Cruel Sports about hunt havoc. Here it is again if you havent seen it: tinyurl/ny5zzod We regularly receive reports of hunt havoc caused by hunts crossing land that they have no permission to be on or hounds being completely out of control. Farmers and landowners have contacted us to express their frustration that their local hunt has come tearing through fields containing pregnant ewes or other vulnerable animals when they were strictly forbidden from doing so. Others have got in touch to tell us about hounds killing their pets or running out of control onto busy roads and railway tracks and endangering not only themselves but other road or railway users (bearing in mind the very recent incident involving hounds from the Dartmoor Hunt on mainline railway tracks). We have also been contacted by delivery drivers and workmen who report getting blocked in on narrow country lanes by riders and hunt support vehicles for extended periods of time. One thing that is emphasised in all of these accounts is the arrogance and lack of regard displayed by the hunts when faced with complaints. Some go further, into violence and intimidation. They do themselves no favours when they behave as if they own the countryside and everyone else is subservient to them, but that does appear to be what many of them believe! If you witness or are the victim of hunt havoc, there are a number of things you can do: 1. COLLECT EVIDENCE - Record photographic or video evidence of what happened. Keep hold of any written communication or documentation you have from the hunt or the police. Keep a timeline of any interactions. 2. CONTACT US - Tell us what happened, where, when, and which hunt it was (if you have this information). Tell us whether you complained to the hunt or the police and how they responded. If you are worried about the hunt trepassing on your land, tell us the boundaries of your land if you feel comfortable doing so. We cannot police your land but we can use this information effectively when we are sabbing. (Email us at [email protected] for more info) 3. CONTACT THE LEAGUE AGAINST CRUEL SPORTS so that they can keep track of what is happening and offer advice or help you contact the media if you want to publicise the incident. league.org.uk/who-we-are/contact-us 4. VISIT THE HOUNDS OFF WEBSITE for advice on action you can take to stop the hunt from trespassing on your land, including what and who to write to. If youre not sure which hunt you are dealing with, use the Hunt Finder on this website (under Action & Advice). The boundaries of hunt countries may not be 100% accurate or up-to-date, but if you get in touch with us we may be able to help. houndsoff.co.uk 5. PHONE THE POLICE to report suspicious or criminal behaviour and remember to get an incident number. If the hunt are obstructing a public highway and preventing you from going about your business, ask them to move and if they refuse to do so then contact the police. If you have made a complaint to the hunt and are being intimidated as a result, call 999.
