WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT ALL THE BAD THINGS THAT THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN BRINGS READ THIS AND YOU MAY FEEL A LITTLE DIFFERENT: Mike Huckabee There’s talk now of the shutdown possibly dragging on through Christmas. But for some people in Washington, Santa Claus already came. For a series on government waste, the Washington Examiner focused on one obscure agency, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. Chances are, you’ve never heard of it or used it. But the median salary there is $120,000 a year. That doesn’t include the bonuses given to half the staff. Or the expense account. That’s where public service really had its rewards. Like $400 coat racks. A $2300 entertainment center for an executive’s $2000 office TV. Employees using federal purchase cards to buy a Bose stereo, hi-def TVs, cell phone plans for family members, cable and Internet packages for their homes – and their SECOND homes. One employee leased a $53,000 car with taxpayer money and charged the government for servicing it at the BWN dealership. And the list of goodies goes on and on. Nobody wants the government to shut down. But when you hear about the National Zoo’s Panda cam being turned off because the government somehow can’t afford to leave it turned on, or veterans being barred from even walking through the World War II Memorial, think about the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. I bet you’ll feel a lot less conciliatory about the federal budget.
