WHY LEARN RUSSIAN? You may well ask Why learn Russian? There are several reasons to learn to speak Russian and learn Russian language reading and writing skills. Some of these reasons include: • Russian - language of science. Today Russian is widely used outside Russia. It is applied as language of a science - means of dialogue, means of coding and storage of universal knowledge (60-70% of all world information is published in English and Russian languages). Russian also is a necessary accessory of world systems of the communications (broadcasts, air- and space communication, etc.). Russian and other world languages are characterized by public functions. For example, they carry out a role of lingus franca, i.e. the intermediary in distribution of a level of knowledge to the different countries; become languages of diplomacy, international trade, transport, tourism. Besides such languages are characterized also by their conscious choice for studying and use (for example, a recognition their subject of teaching at schools and high schools of the majority of the countries; de jure recognition as a working language in the international organizations, etc.) • Language of Russian culture. Russian became advanced, rich, opened in the potentialities, ordered, historically balanced language, capable to serve all needs - not only national, but also universal. It has occured in many respects owing to creativity of Russian people, Russian scientists, policy, technics, culture and in бульшей degrees of the literature that was the main source of development, processing and polishing for Russian. The universal importance of fiction, all culture created in certain language, is of great importance at assignment to language of the status world. • Government, politics and international relations. It is necessary to tell, that Russian language on open CIS spaces has resisted, and its authority is connected today not with pressure, but only with its advantages and needs. Russian language continues to play the important role in all spheres in the CIS countries and, first of all, in sphere of culture. Russian is irreplaceable and in the field of interethnic dialogue. The knowledge of Russian is a positive part of that heritage which remains on the post-soviet space. • Russian language and business opportunities Russia is one of the fast-growing emerging markets now and its re-entry into the world economic system has opened up an enormous and largely unexploited market for Western goods and services. Russia possesses a well-educated work force and vast natural resources; given this combination of factors, business opportunities in the region can only increase over time. Over 7000 US companies have already opened businesses in Russia, and Western European and Asian companies are even more actively investing in the region. More and more Russians prefer to invest their money abroad partly because of the financial stability of Western and Eastern economies and partly because of the imperfection of Russian legislative base and arbitrariness of the Government. Most of investors do not know foreign language and the irony is that they do not want to deal with the Russian bank’s staff. This can easily be explained by the absence of the bank secrecy in Russia (yes, Russian secret service and Financial intelligent service could get any data they need from a bank or bank employers any time and Russian employees of foreign banks are most of the time citizens of Russia). The latest tendency is that more and more banks hire Russian-speaking managers or motivate their offshore client relationship managers to learn Russian, especially in such financial centers as London and Singapore. • Proficiency in Russian language is essential for entering Russian University. Russia has a long-standing tradition in high-quality education for all citizens. It probably has also one of the best mass-education systems in the world producing a literacy rate (98%) exceeding most Western European countries. Education is split into a compulsory Basic Education, and ongoing Higher Education. Proficiency in the language of instruction is essential to successful study. Consequently, foreign students must attend a Russian language course and pass the final examination in order to be qualified for admission. Where another language is the language of instruction for a particular course, students will also be required to prove their proficiency in this language. Foreign students will be required to attend a preparatory course which involves study in the Russian language and in relevant academic subjects. Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite for admission to state-allocated study places for which tuition fees are not charged.
