WORKING ON A UNDERRATED DISNEY LIST FOR DECEMEMBER, BUT HERES A LOOK AT MY NUMBER 5 PICK: 05. TREASURE PLANET: Take TREASURE ISLAND, and set it in a very Anime’-Final Fantasy Steampunk world, and that’s TREASURE PLANET. This film is pretty much one of the first big budget failings for Disney and it’s a film I literally stayed away from when it was out, largely because I had seen plenty of TI adaptations in the past. Plus, many of the characters didn’t interest me. However, upon seeing this film, I think it’s pretty underrated. For one, the animation style here is both very epic and very Anime-ish (a very cool thing). Plus, having Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jim Hawkins gave it a more rounded performance (Yea, it was still in his THIRD ROCK days, but he does a good job). Plus, the design they did with Long John Silver is very cool (an animated character with CGI mechanical cyborg parts worked insanely well). Even the plot, while basic to the Stevenson plot, works well in outer space. There’s a lot of characters I really didn’t like (the Doctor and the B.E.N. robot are really annoying and slow the movie down whenever they’re on screen), but on the whole, TREASURE PLANET should be given at least a look, just to appreciate the great art.
