Wattled curassow - watercolor A3 Its interesting to know why these large, beautiful birds are called curassows . The first of these birds that arrived in Europe with the Spanish conquerors were sent from the Curaçao island (Netherlands Antilles - although no wild curassow has ever lived on the island - probably they were imported by Curaçao before sent to European countries) - so the birds were named after the name of the island! The Brazilian name of the many curassow species is mutum. It comes from the Tupi-Guarani language, and means the one with black skin (mi = skin , t u = black). So curassows or mutuns - any name you like - will describe some of the largest and most beautiful flying land birds of South American forests. And all curassow species deserve to be preserved - and I think this group certainly will give its contribution to this cause!!
