We couldnt do JulEYE without mentioning GLAUCOMA! Glaucoma is caused by increased pressure of the liquid in the eye. As the pressure increases it presses on the weakest part of the eyeball, the optic disc which is where all the nerves that carry the messages to the brain come in and out of the eye. The pressure on the nerves causes them to be damaged and stops the messages from reaching the brain, causing loss of peripheral vision. The damage is not reversible and if the pressure is not reduced the vision will continue to get worse and can eventually cause blindness. The pressure can be reduced in a wide range of ways but early detection is essential!
