We saw Boyhood yesterday. I loved it. First, of course, there is the novelty of watching real people age in real time, and the little tiny touches of technology, trends, pop music (and some other kinds of music), and clothing that helped us realize when another year had passed. But above and beyond that, the film is filled with moments touching, sad, embarrassing, and simple. Ethan Hawke as the father is particularly great - its great watching him slowly grow into a way better parent and person than seems possible at the beginning. Linklater lucked out with the kid he choose all those years ago to play Mason, the boy whose hood is followed. Hes so natural, so good at holding emotions close behind the things he says and does in public. Just a really, really good movie.
