Weather Bomb For once this isnt just a media buzz word used to create dramatic headlines. It comes from a low pressure system undergoing rapid/explosive cyclogenesis (i.e. its central pressure drops very rapidly and it strengthens), and this is also known as bombogenesis. Hence, weather bomb. The actual weather bomb i.e rapidly deepening low pressure system, is not affecting (or hitting) the UK directly. It is to our north, but we (especially northern areas) are feeling its affects as strong winds are created by the steep pressure gradient between this system and higher pressure to the south. That pressure gradient is less steep the further south you go, hence the winds arent as strong further south. ---------------------------------------------------- Thunder snow We have strong cold winds passing over relatively warm sea water (The North Atlantic), picking up a lot of energy and creating quite intense and electrified showers. We also have a strong jet stream overhead which helps to intensify these showers further. Lift provided by the Scottish mountains also gives these showers further energy. Of course, with us dragging in cold air these showers are falling as snow to high ground and a wintry mix to lower levels, despite those relatively warm waters modifying that cold air somewhat.
