Welding students earn first place in competition 2013-MCC welding team-first place Welding students from Mohave Community College took first place in the state competition “Welders Without Borders: 2013 Welding Thunder Expo and Welding Fabrication Contest” on Oct. 25-26 in Cottonwood, Ariz. “Everything went really smoothly and our students finished on time,” said Buddy May, welding program director. “We are, of course, thrilled with taking first place in this fairly new competition. We enjoyed competing last year in Yuma and already look forward to next year’s challenge, which is scheduled to be hosted by Mesa High School in Mesa, Ariz.” Six Kingman residents who are enrolled in the welding program on MCC’s Neal Campus-Kingman traveled with three MCC advisors to the competition. The team received instructions and guidelines prior to the competition for a barbecue and smoker, identifying that it would have to be construct in eight hours. This could not have been accomplished without the students’ dedication and commitment during practice sessions and during the welding competition. The team took first place for its barbecue construction and MCC also took second place for a barbecue lunch that was prepared by an MCC welding student and submitted according to competition criteria. “MCC is proud of its high-demand welding program and this event recognizes the quality skills our students are obtaining through this rigorous program that prepares them for national certifications,” May said.
