Well, Paula Deen, you got caught. You swore to tell the truth, - TopicsExpress

Well, Paula Deen, you got caught. You swore to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you God. You used arguably racial slurs when you were being deposed in a law suit the other day. You’ve even defended southern attitudes toward race on other occasions. Your words are indefensible and now you will pay the piper. And, just because billions of other people of every color in the world, you reckon, have the same attitudes or worse that you have is no excuse. I love you Paula, but your goose is cooked. You helped fill the coffers of the Food Network, but they dumped you today. And, I wonder, was it the moral superiority of the Network against racism which prompted their decision or the fear of losing almighty dollars? I will posit out loud just a question. I wonder what the rest of us would say about our thoughts and words through the years? Do we have any bigotry or prejudice in our closets? And you say, well, she is a public figure and should have known better. What makes you think those of us who are not public figures are any less accountable for our words than public figures? And where do you get the idea that the people at Chick-Fil-a should be any less liable for their stance on gays or Baptist Churches in Atlanta which have severed ties with the Boy Scouts of America because the Boy Scouts organization said boys who happen to gay are just as welcome in the ranks as boys who are straight? But you say, that’s different from what Paula said. Really? Lord-a-mercy on us all, really? I pulled from the shelves of my library today Wendell Berry’s insightful book, The Hidden Wound. It’s the story of how he has struggled with his own wounds when it comes to prejudice. What an honest rendering of his heart and mind. I wonder what the rest of us would say if like Paula, we had to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?
