Well, it begins. I just found out that my little cousin (I call her that because shes the baby of the family, otherwise shes a highly educated, extremely smart, young professional in her 30s) had her house in France vandalized with, get this… pepperoni pizza boxes with graffiti on it, claiming she was some Damned terrorist. Why? Because she is Turkish. This sheer act of utter ignorance and senseless stupidity appalls me and breaks my heart for all humanity. This, from a nation of intellectuals. All they knew about her is her nationality. They dont know what kind of a family she comes from (liberal), her education (all French), her religious background (none, like me), her law-abiding citizenship, not to mention her culinary taste (she is an excellent cook that can do wonders with pork products)… I understand that people are in pain in the face of loss. I understand they are afraid. I do not understand how they can be so prone to the vicious cycle of hate. I have three family members who have lived in France almost as long as I have lived in the U.S. Both of my cousins and my older sister. Am I supposed to worry about their safety? Why am I supposed to be worried about their safety? Yes, this one was harmless, in the sense that no one was injured and no property was destroyed. But what next? Will they slash her car tires? Throw a rock through the window? Hurt her cats? Hurt her? And if something bad happens to any of these family members of mine, how will the news be reported? Some white French dudes, who had no relation to any religious extremism had temporary insanity? Look, I am not an apologist for Islam. I was told there was no allah, before I found out there was no Santa Claus. But seriously, if I hear anymore about Why Muslims want to destroy our way of life, Im going to vomit. If the founding country of existentialism can produce these pizza-box-throwing morons, clearly, all of humanity is capable of violence and terrorism. So, I dont want any of your labels.
