What Matters Most? I do a lot of corporate training events. Most of the events I do are with upper level management people. CEOs, CFOs, VPs, and the like. I have done events with huge law firms, Hilton Hotels, Wyndham Resorts, Microsoft, ESPN, Warren Buffets companies, Suntrust bank and huge oil companies. One of the things Im discovering as I encounter these very successful people is that the successful people have a laser focus on what matters most. They are able to cut through all the busyness going on and figure out what the most important thing is at that moment. Im realizing that the same holds true with songwriters. The ones who succeed tend to develop the ability to cut through the crap and to get business taken care of. The good news is that most of us dont have this ability from the start. It seems to be an acquired skill. I have talked about this in other posts, but I try to suggest it to everyone I mentor. If you dont remember anything else I have ever said, remember this. The key to success is doing the right things, at the right time, for a long time. 1/2 of the battle in the music business is figuring out WHAT is the most beneficial thing you could do at any given moment. It could be improving your writing. Making a phone call. Reaching out to someone to collaborate with. Many of us let ourselves believe that, because we are busy and working hard, we are making progress. I believe that is only true if you are doing the right things. If you are writing sad, polka songs, they could be the best sad polka songs the world has ever known, but that is not going to help you get ahead. If you havent been getting the results you want with your music, I would suggest that you probably need to pause for a moment and make sure you are doing the RIGHT things. My guess would be that you are not. Doing the right things brings results. So, take a minute each day to look at the most important things you could do that day to help you get ahead. If you can figure out what they are and do those things, youve got the best chance of succeeding that you can possibly have. Figure out what matters most and write on. Marty Dodson
