What an amazing yet very busy 24 hours! I had the pleasure of meeting with the Terwillager Towne Enterpreneurs to the Rescue last night and came home buzzing with ideas. We got up early this morning and loaded up the car. Our first stop was the Sands Hotel for the Edmonton Reptile Expo where we dropped off 2 huge boxes of new items for the Edmonton Reptile Rehab & Rescue. Then it was off to Meikas Safehouse in Sherwood Park. I must say, I was totally in my element. Janine and Ian have turned their home into a bird sanctuary. One room houses all the large birds, while another room has all the smaller birds. Their stories range from surrender due to an owner passing away or because the owner traveled or was unable to devote the time required that a bird needs. Then there were the stories of bird mills - backyard breeders and hoarders. These beautiful social creatures came to Meikas Safehouse terrified of people, some had been abused, and some were bonded pairs that cannot be without one another. What did they find at Meikas? A sanctuary, a home, a safe place where they can fly free and root and nest and be with other birds. It was simply a beautiful place and I could have stayed all day. The white Goffins cockatoo is Mr. Spock. He is a cheeky, very active bird who I think probably could find himself getting into trouble if not carefully watched. And then there is the beautiful Arthur the Amazon and this gorgeous red Macaw whose owner passed away and the family was unable to care for him. While I wanted to love him up, he is hesitant of people and I gave him his space, but thanked him for letting me hold him. Before I left, I purchased several feathered creations from Meikas Safehouse. All these beautiful earnings or charms are made from feathers of rescued birds. By purchasing one, you are helping to support homeless and rescued parrots. I would post what I bought (and I bought quite a bit!) but they are gifts for my treasured friends so I cant spoil the secret! Janine also graciously accepted Citrus feathers and will be making something special for me. Then we were off to Pet Valu in Sherwood Park to drop off supplies for Sundance Canine Rescue then off to St. Albert to meet with Infinite Woofs.
