What does thematic teaching look like at Singing Pines School? One aspect of the 2013-14 school year thematic teaching curriculum includes several educational field trips with awesome, hands-on learning experiences! We will start the year in an Ecology/Geography theme with trips to Holcomb Valley and the Discovery Center. We will have interactive activities that will help us to better understand how to take care of our earth and to navigate across it. In October our theme is Bats, which is perfect for Halloween and we have several science projects that will teach us more about these amazing mammals. November’s theme is Native Americans with a field trip to the Baldwin Lake Pueblo. What a great opportunity to learn about our local history and the Native Americans that lived in our valley. We will also be working at a Soup Kitchen this month. Our students will experience the real world through volunteering and get a chance to give back to our community. Christmas around the World is our December theme, and while we learn about the history and customs of Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza and how they are celebrated around the world; we will also be working on our Performing Arts skills as we practice and perform our annual Christmas play. Additionally, we will be participating in Operation Christmas Child-another opportunity for our students to make a difference! 2014 will see events such as our Invention Convention, where our students will be creating and displaying their own inventions; our 2nd annual Talent Show and our Art Gallery, where our students’ art will be on display and for sale! We will also have trips to the Science Center, Aquarium, ropes course and a Pirate Ship! As you can see, the curriculum at Singing Pines School is hands-on, interactive and focuses on the whole child! This type of project-based learning follows the California State Standards and so much more!
