What is Social Security Disability (SSDI)? To be eligible for Social Security Disability benefits, you have to meet both the technical and medical eligibility requirements. To be technically eligible for Social Security Disability (SSDI) benefits, you must have worked 20 out of the last 40 fiscal quarters, which is roughly 5 out of the last 10 years. Also, a person must be unable to engage in substantial gainful activity (SGA) due to a severe physical or mental limitation. For 2013, SGA is considered to be $1040 a month for non-blind individuals, and it is $1740 a month for blind individuals.
