What tickled the funny bone of an Austrian far from Home... Das Fest des Huhnes - The Festival of the Chicken Been confined due to unforeseen circumstances this week, my mind for various reasons wander to the subject of chickens. During this like wander tour, I decided to explore YouTube for a program that has Dad in fits of laughter back in the early 90s, when SBS brought first the documentary by Walter Wippersberg, an Austrian director & screenwriter to Australian TV screens. Unfortunately I couldnt find an English subtitled or narrated version of Das Fest des Huhnes, I did however surprisingly find an SBS subtitled and narrated version of the sequel Dunkles rätselhaftes Österreich (Dark Mysterious Austria). I actually was fortunate to attend a panel discussion on the films, that include the director, some of the crew and the cast, including the Austria/Nigerian actor and star of the films, Frank Oladeinde. It was just as hilarious as the films. So for anyone wanting to view a weird spin on Austria and with a sense of humour, I recommend something that amused Franz Engl and gave him a kooky view of home, before he returned home for good in 1998. I am disappointed that I cant find an English version of the first programme, but if you are in Austria you wont have a problem with the DE links below. So either love or hate them, they are great satirical parodies on those rather patronising ethnological programs Western countries made up the 90s, but actually better as they blatantly show how infantile the so-called West viewed other cultures and how some people still do.
