What’s Happening at the Bushnell Park Carousel The City of Hartford is expanding the Carousel operation making it a year-round organization. They are adding a new entrance, a new function room, adding heat to the pavilion, and adding restrooms. Construction is now underway with a projected reopening date of April 22, 2015. The magnificent antique, wooden, Bushnell Park Carousel was created in 1914 by Solomon Stein and Harry Goldstein, owners of the Artistic Carousel Company from Brooklyn, New York. It has 48 horses, including 36 jumper horses, (those that go up and down), and 12 stander horses, (those that do not), and two chariots. S&G carved in the Coney Island Style of carving creating big passionate animals with their eyes wide, their nostrils flared and in some instances, their tongues hanging out. Typical design features are large cabbage roses, buckles and a fish scale design on the trappings. The Carousel is managed by The New England Carousel Museum and as many of you know, the Museum artists have been restoring the Carousel over the last few years. We now have only 9 more horses to complete. Although we have closed early this season, we do plan to re-open in the spring with a dramatically improved pavilion and a fully restored Carousel in time for her 101st birthday. We hope that while the Carousel is closed, you will explore the New England Carousel Museum, if you have not already done so. It is beautiful, and fun, and worth the visit. We hope to see you back on the magical machine in the spring. If you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to contribute to the restoration of the Carousel, please feel free to contact me. Louise L. DeMars Executive Director
