When I first moved to the South Sunday Supper was a big deal - or - TopicsExpress

When I first moved to the South Sunday Supper was a big deal - or at least it seemed to be to me being an outsider learning new cultural norms. Supper was on the table at a certain time, and everybody, without exception was expected to be there. It was a time when the good china, and the manners, came out. It was a time when the family and close friends (if invited) all gathered together in one spot and shared a meal and conversation about their lives, their week, their plans and their dreams. Some of you call it Sunday dinner, but whichever you call it, it was considered the main meal of the day on Sunday, most often served earlier than the usual weeknight dinner, usually somewhere between 1 and 3 in the afternoon. At the Sheppard little cabin in the woods Sunday Supper is served at 6pm. In the South though, Im afraid that Sunday supper has taken a back seat to the hectic pace of life, but I sure wish it would experience a revival. As an IT person I think that in this age of technology, we all still need that time to unplug and reconnect as people, connect with one another, and face to face... not here on Facebook, or email, or through cell phones, texting, etc. I mean connect in real live conversation. My wife and I rarely go out to eat because I cook so much at home. But when we go out I am stunned at all the people whose phones are right under their nose, so that they can read & respond to every text or Facebook post that comes up. Around the Sheppard household we make the dinner table a No Cell Phone Zone. At the dinner table we can discuss ANYTHING under the sun. By removing the cell phones folks are engaging in conversation with the rest of the party, including their children. Is this not part of what we should teaching our children and their children? If you cant be away from technology long enough to sit down and enjoy the company and your meal, then, what is the purpose? So I say put all that technology away for an hour or so, strictly ban it from the table, and gather everybody together for Sunday supper again. While some may be resistant or feel awkward at first, I think youll be pleased with the long term results. Sunday Supper menu here today will be Shrimp Creole or Chuck roast with carrots and spuds; fresh lima beans and corn; Sweet tea (house wine of the South) and for dessert frozen yogurt peach pie. Enjoy your Sunday and give thanks! God Bless!
