When I was young my head was filled with all kinds of romantic notions, and I eagerly lapped up many touching 18th and 19th century traditional songs such as this. I laid up deep within my soul a treasure-house of beautiful phrases and heart-rending declarations of true love, fully expecting that I would be in need of them some day. Alas, it was never to be, for reasons that are perhaps self-evident – in any case ‘Mary and her gallant clerk’ doesn’t quite have the same ring to it. And despite everything that I now know, when I rediscovered this song the other night a flicker of sweet remembrance of those far-off days touched my heart.
