Whenever someone asks me what Mad Men is about I always refer to - TopicsExpress

Whenever someone asks me what Mad Men is about I always refer to this scene, but it’s as much a statement about the pursuit of happiness in a consumer society as it is a thesis for the show. I really do believe that at least in part the search for self-validation drives nearly everything we do – not just the products we buy, but the relationships we forge. We gravitate towards people who like the same music, or movies, or have the same hobbies or interests or whatever not just because we want something to talk about but because we want them to say, “You’re right,” or maybe just, “I understand you.” Anyway, the reason I’m bringing this up is that for a lot of this year things have been feeling pretty bleak. 9 times out of 10 I’d rather make cracks about my circumstances on Facebook than actually talk through things with anyone, but even that can help, and especially recently. Though the specifics of what bothers me may be unique, the bigger shapes those problems take are generally universal and the way a lot of you have responded has reminded me that they’re manageable, too. I take some things on here too personally and I probably shouldnt, but it’s not always a bad thing – at least not when it’s all of you reminding me I can and will be okay. TL;DR: Thanks for being here.
