While many of you wont know who I am talking about, this post is very important to me. Having said that, it is with sadness that I tell of the passing of Bob Dewey as relayed to me by his daughter Robyn. Bob was one of the original Asst. Dog Wardens of Milford Animal Control, my mentor, and ultimately my friend. Bob brought a high level of professionalism and compasion to the job when such wasnt the case. Bob was a pioneer in the field. Bob never wanted to be in charge and he would tell you that frequently as was the case when Pat Liptak was hired to be his boss in the 80s. Bob saved Pat, me and many others from serious dog bites and dangers by his knowledge and good yankee common sense. As for Pat Liptak stories with Bob, Ill leave those for her to share. In 1989 I was hired as a seasonal temp asst. Dog Warden and spent many hours working with and riding on patrol with Bob. Coincidentally through our many conversations I found out that I, as a young police officer had helped Bob many years before with a dog that was stuck neck deep in the mud in a swamp. Bob would tell anyone that would listen that I was the young police officer who walked out with him hip deep into the mud, to follow the whines of the trapped K-9 and rescue it. To this end Bob made it his mission to make sure that I got the permanent appointment as the asst. when he retired. Bob was loyal as loyal could be and he had no problem protecting his shelter family against any and all interlopers, nay sayers, and anyone or anything that would try to bring us harm. Anyone that tried to mess with Bobs brood or his lunch time was immediately sorry and learned a valuable lesson. Bob and Marylou retired and move to Arizona where the weather was kinder to Marylous health. Over the years they would make many trips back east and Bob would now ride with me on patrol and share stories old and new. Bob lost Marylou a few years back and we lost touch as the years passed but I will never lose my respect, admiration, and gratitude for a man who was and is bigger than life. Rest in peace my friend, you have so earned it and I will miss you!
