While we all have been heavily in the debate over the use of the word Tranny in our lexicon this past week, people have been throwing around things like Word Police and Fascist when in all actuality I feel we have all missed the point. The Trans community members that I have spoken with are NOT asking people to NEVER use the T word, what they are asking is we be mindful of context in which we use it. i.e: Dont use the word in a context-less forum such as the title of an event, on a billboard ad or as a broad stereotype but if the context is one of sisterhood among friends or if you yourself identify as a Tranny then by all means use the word in the correct context. The point of all this is not to have the T word perceived by people outside of the queer community as an acceptable word for non-queer people to use, for people to use to categorize or to use it in a derogatory manner. I think in all of this we have been missing each others side of things and miss-communications happen, but if we all come at it from a place of Family and try to treat each other with respect and dignity we WILL be able to have a healthy conversation, allowing all sides to feel heard and hopefully all come out of this as a UNIFIED Family of LGBTIQ people.
