Why every word counts... As an English teacher I am always asked why English is compulsory. But Miss when are we ever going to use an essay when we leave school?. But miss who cares what technique the author is using !. Last week I was asked the same question. Miss why is English compulsory? My response: If I tell you a terrorist attacked, what does the word terrorist mean? Their response: Somebody bad who wants to kill people in mass numbers. If I tell you a group of rebels shot down a plane, what does the word rebel mean? Their response: A person that is going against an idea because they dont believe in it. If I tell you the military has gone into a village and attacked men, women and children, what does the word military mean? Their response: A legitimate group protecting their country. This is why English is compulsory. It teaches us the meaning of words and how certain groups of people dictate which word goes where. If the English language is abused, there can be catastrophic ramifications... For instance, if we read the soldier is kidnapped rather than the soldier is captured, all of a sudden the soldier is innocent and those who kidnapped him are evil, blood thirsty bastards who live off the blood of others. When you control language you control the world....
