Why would a teacher feel its their duty to punish a student for reading the bible? The kid says he was not reading it aloud but reading to himself - but even if he was reading it aloud - what justification would a teacher have to telling him to stop? This is the Word of God, here! No reading the Word of God in our schools? Are we crazy? We used to prohibit atheists from holding public office, now we let them lord over our children in school? What we doing here? Noah Webster, author of the first American Speller and the first Dictionary stated, The moral principles and precepts contained in the scriptures ought to form the basis of all our civil constitutions and laws. . . All the miseries and evils which men suffer from vice, crime, ambition, injustice, oppression, slavery, and war, proceed from their despising or neglecting the precepts contained in the Bible. The Bible is the best of all books, for it is the word of God and teaches us the way to be happy in this world and in the next. Continue therefore to read it and to regulate your life by its precepts. John Jay, Original Chief-Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court “A bible and a newspaper in every house, a good school in every district – all studied and appreciated as they merit – are the principal support of virtue, morality, and civil liberty.” Benjamin Franklin “All civil rights and the right to hold office were to be extended to persons of any Christian denomination.” Roger Sherman “And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that His justice cannot sleep forever.” Thomas Jefferson. “Before any man can be considered as a member of Civil Society, he must be considered as a subject of the Governor of the Universe.” James Madison “Dont let anyone claim to be a true American… dont let them claim the tribute of American patriotism if they ever attempt to remove religion from politics.” George Washingtons farewell address “I am a Christian, in the only sense in which he wished any one to be; sincerely attached to his doctrines, in preference to all others; ascribing to himself every human excellence; and believing he never claimed any other.” Thomas Jefferson, Letter to Benjamin Rush, April 21, 1803 “I believe no one can read the history of our country without realizing that the Good Book and the spirit of the Savior have from the beginning been our guiding geniuses ... Whether we look to the first Charter of Virginia ... or to the Charter of New England ... or to the Charter of Massachusetts Bay ... or to the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut ... the same objective is present ... a Christian land governed by Christian principles. I believe the entire Bill of Rights came into being because of the knowledge our forefathers had of the Bible and their belief in it: freedom of belief, of expression, of assembly, of petition, the dignity of the individual, the sanctity of the home, equal justice under law, and the reservation of powers to the people ... I like to believe we are living today in the spirit of the Christian religion. I like also to believe that as long as we do so, no great harm can come to our country.” Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren, wrote in 1954 “I have always said, and will always say, that the studious perusal of the sacred volume will make us better citizens.” Thomas Jefferson
