Will NSA revelations have an impact on the IT security - TopicsExpress

Will NSA revelations have an impact on the IT security sector? Wired has an article considering the question of how last Friday’s leaks about the USA breaking encryption and putting backdoors into it systems, with or without the company in question’s help will affect the IT security industry. It notes that a technology company accused of putting backdoors for the NSA into their products in the 1990s has done pretty poorly. It also notes the prediction that the PRISM allegations could cost $35 billion. On the other hand it also points out that with this set of allegations we don’t have any names, so it is unlikely that any individual company will suffer unduly. Moreover although we would expect US companies to suffer as a result there is no reason to think that they are more affected than companies from other countries. The question then will be whether companies (and individuals) distrust the whole industry, or do they simply live with the fact that their security is not going to be effective against the intelligence agencies. I suspect they would go for the latter – I think that most people want security against criminals, they may not like the idea of the government bypassing their security but probably think it is unlikely to actually affect them much. wired/threatlevel/2013/09/tech-industry-tainted/ idebate.org/blog-post/will-nsa-revelations-have-impact-it-security-sector
