With more than half a billion people connected to each other on Facebook, we continue to believe the single greatest opportunity we have to affect environmental change is using the power and reach of our platform. That’s why, today—Earth Day—Facebook is joining the celebration by partnering with the Earth Day Network – an organization that grew out of the first Earth Day in 1970 and whose mission is to broaden, diversify and mobilize the environmental movement – to develop and promote the “Billion Acts of Green Facebook app. https://apps.facebook/billionactsofgreen/ The Billion Acts of Green app on Facebook is part of Earth Day Network’s “A Billion Acts of Green®” campaign that encourages individuals and organizations to undertake acts of environmental service and advocacy, and to share them with the world. By pledging to save energy, use less water, use alternative transportation, or take other steps, people can use Facebook to mark Earth Day with meaningful action – and can encourage their friends to do the same. In addition to using Facebook the service to help promote environmental responsibility, Facebook the company recently took unprecedented steps to reduce the impact of our operations and, potentially, those of all technology companies. The centerpiece of this effort is the Open Compute Project (OCP), which offers server and data center designs that enable us to use 38 percent less power. By making these designs available to anyone, our investment in the OCP has thepotential to save many times the energy that Facebooks own operations will ever use. opencompute.org/ The Open Compute Project is a chance to integrate “Earth Day” thinking into every day operations, not just at Facebook but at any company or organization that adopts the technology. On this Earth Day we encourage anyone – engineers, data center managers, CFOs – to join this community effort and keep pushing the technology forward to help reduce computing’s environmental impact. As people, organizations and companies focus on environmental stewardship this Earth Day, we hope the Open Compute Project – participating in it, adopting it, and encouraging others to do the same – can be part of their plans. In addition, we hope people will go to the Billion Acts of Green app, make a pledge, spread the word and put the power of Facebook to work for our planet.
