With the furnace out and having no heat except for the fireplace I - TopicsExpress

With the furnace out and having no heat except for the fireplace I am reminded of what it was like growing up. Getting into bed was an experience back then. There was a thick quilt but it took a while to warm up. No electric blankets in those days. The upstairs bedrooms were always cold. The only heat for the house was with wood— for the kitchen stove and a heater in the living room. The kitchen stove also heated water that was used for a weekly bath (and there was never enough water for a tub full). The heater took a while to warm up after the fire was started in the morning so us kids could even sit on top if it for a while. One of the chores for us youngsters was to keep the big box in the entry hall filled with firewood. We also got to split cedar logs into kindling to get the fires going. I suppose those must have been “The good old days.”
