#Wonderful #Italy: #Urban #Trekking during the #Spoleto #Festival Il Festival dei due Mondi (27 June-13 July) On April 28 1911 the German writer Hermann #Hesse, wrote in a postcard to his wife, Spoleto is the most beautiful discovery I made in Italy and indeed he was right. Walking through tiny alleys, crossing cosy squares and dwelling along a ting tangle of streets is a pleasant journey through history and art that starts in pre-#Roman times, recognizable in the cyclopean walls (clearly visible in via Leoncilli), it continues with the glories of the Roman Empire (the Roman House and the #Amphitheatre), and continues in the Middle Ages with the Lombards of which some points of interest are included in the #UNESCO World Heritage list of the Lombards in Italy: places of power. Between periods of splendor and decadence Spoleto became an important center of the #Papal States, not only because of its a strategic and military position, but also as a cultural center. This intellectual heritage is reflected also in the well-known and important Festival of Two Worlds, one of the most famous international events dedicated to theater, dance and music that this year is scheduled from 27 #June to 13 #July.
