Wondering what you all think of this statement she made about not being African American... I will be the first to say that I agree with her whole heartedly and understand where she is coming from. I do not think she meant for it to be taken the way some people are taking it. People are viewing her claim to be American is her denying her African heritage or claiming to be white and I think that is just so beyond wrong. For her to categorize herself as something different than American only further segregates the American people. There are tons of white people from different countries in Europe but we dont call them European American, we call them American because they were born and raised here in our country. Why should black people who were also born in this country be labeled any differently? I was born and raised here in America but to tell people I am American doesnt make sense to them because Im not black or white, I am gray. I love having an Afghan heritage and I would never deny that, it truly makes me proud and I wouldnt change it for the world. But I must say that sometimes it does bother me that I cant be considered American to some people because I dont fit the all American stereotype. My parents are Afghan Americans because they were born in Afghanistan and became American citizens. I was born here, technically making me American. An African American is technically someone who was born in Africa and has become an American citizen. Should Raven Simone be lumped into this category simply because she is black? Should I be lumped into some category other than American because I am not white? Do we not have the right to claim the American title because we arent white? This is our country too damnit Lol.
