Words that should give us pause: I am an immigrant and a Holocaust survivor. When I was 13 years old, England saved 10,000 Jewish children from certain death by allowing us to enter the country. We left families, most of whom we never saw again, and followed new life trajectories. Now, 75 years later, my heart goes out to the thousands of children fleeing from Central America to our country. Are these children leaving their homes and their families, traveling alone for more than 1,300 miles, simply for a better economic future? We need to learn about the forces causing them to flee. How great is the danger if they remained with their families, or are sent back? This country did not show its compassion to my generation, many of whom could have been saved from the gas chambers. Will we turn our backs once again? Will politicians stop shouting about “illegals” and show some humanity?
