TRANSFER TO IMMORTALITY PROLOGUE It was time. More specifically it was HIS time. He would be the first to make the transfer to immortality. It was June 2048, the eve of Brian Spinkson’s 100th birthday and the last day of his physical life on earth. He lay wrapped in the arms of an unknown woman whom he would soon discover to be the love of his life. In a few short hours he would be the first person to experience the immortality transfer technology he had developed only a few years earlier. He was as physically and mentally fit as he had ever been in his life yet he was preparing to exchange his physical existence for a virtual eternity shared with the woman whom The Cloud would soon choose for him. The walls in the bare room which housed the blissful bed on which they lay glowed intermittently in peaceful, relaxing colours. He could just detect the soft sounds of heavenly music floating above the silky tresses of his eternal lover’s hair that obscured her face, her head resting on his naked chest. He was unafraid of the journey he was about to take, comforted by the warm, gently breathing body beside him. Though he could neither see her face nor recognise the contours of her body, covered as they were by a feather-light sensuous silk sheet, he felt the familiar stirrings of desire and he smiled in recollection of the lifelong struggle between his higher cerebral inspirations and his never diminished hedonistic lust for the pleasures of the flesh. As he lay beside the woman he had always loved, he reflected on how different his transfer would be to the passing away of his mother over 30 years before. She had been a grey withering shell, ravaged by dementia, dying alone in a care home, no longer able to remember even how to eat or drink. Her passing on alone into a world unknown in the silence and darkness of her nursing home room could not be more different to Brian’s imminent transfer into a world where all would be known and revealed. Where she had been withered, tired and alone, Brian would be alert and excited. His passing on would be witnessed by the billions of viewers all across the globe and even out into space where man’s first extra-terrestrial outposts were already being constructed. As the minutes ticked away before The Cloud would begin to totally immerse him in recollections of his life and loves, powerful forces from light years across the galaxies were shaping their unknown and unpredicted impacts upon his dreams. He and his eternal lover-to-be were entwined in a naked embrace and he could feel the soft, silky, shaven skin of her secret place riding gently against his taut, muscular thigh and his slowly swelling penis throbbed softly against her warm, smooth belly. His left hand stroked her back whilst his right gently caressed her hair. He reflected on how many times with how many women he had felt this certain contentment of mutual love, affection and desire and he wondered who the all-seeing, all-knowing Cloud would finally choose to be his eternal love. Beneath his tanned, shaven scalp countless subcutaneous neuro-receptors and transmitters were wirelessly and silently messaging backwards and forwards to the Cloud, monitoring his brainwaves and converting his thoughts and dreams into high fidelity immersive experiences that accurately reflected the sights, sounds, smells, sensations and emotions of years gone by. As the seconds relentlessly marched on he found himself mouthing the words of “Fight the Good Fight”, one of his favourite childhood hymns “Lay hold on life and it shall be thy joy and crown eternally.” All around the globe, billions of people would share this experience through the multiplicity of channels provided by T-RX (Transferred Reality Experiences). The majority of the world’s now unsustainable population would be watching the free streamed broadcast from the room itself. In homes, businesses, bars, stadiums and cinemas around the world, individually, in couples or in mass audiences the whole of humanity would be witnessing the last 24 hours of a human life, sharing Brian’s memories as they became projected on all the room’s surfaces and voting interactively for their choice of his eternal lover. This was the ultimate reality experience, light years away from the “Big Brother” Reality Television of the “Noughties”. For the “platinum” experience, many thousands of people, had invested fortunes in the same subcutaneous scalp implants used by Brian. These individuals would be sharing exactly what Brian was about to experience, sensing all his pains and pleasures over a century condensed in a 24 hour period. They would know what he knew and feel what he felt. The time had come – the good fight of his physical presence was about to end…….
