Workshop on E-Waste Management organized JAMMU, OCTOBER 22- PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry in association with Ministry of Environment and Forest and supported by Jammu and Kashmir State Pollution Control Board today organized a Workshop on E-Waste Management–Challenges, Prospects and Strategies. Minister of State for Cooperative, Fisheries, Printing, Finance and Planning, Dr. Manohar Lal Sharma, was the Chief Guest while Chairman, SPCB J&K, Vinod Ranjan was the guest of honour. The workshop was aimed to highlight the global and national concerns, associated with strategies to address the problem and provide an overview of Proper Management of E-Waste. This workshop presented a waste management system with shared responsibility for the collection and recycling of electronic wastes amongst the manufacturers/assemblers, importers, recyclers, regulatory bodies and the consumers. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Manohar Lal Sharma appreciated the action taken by SPCB, Jammu to ensure effective implementation of the E-Waste Rules in the state and inventorization of E-Waste. He also requested all the producers to comply with the said rules at the earliest. He also deliberated that e-waste management is at an infancy stage in the State and State Government is keen to boost electronics industry and e-waste recycling industry. Vinod Ranjan apprised the participants about the increasing quantities of E-waste with changing life style and a need to establish well integrated collection mechanism by the Producers. He asked the producers to comply with the Rules, so as to ensure effective collection and scientific disposal of e-waste. Chairman, J&K Committee, PHD Chamber Vikrant Kuthiala apprised that there is an urgent need for a detailed assessment of the current and future scenario including quantification, existing disposal practices, environment impacts etc. E-waste collection, transportation, treatment, storage, recycling and disposal facilities need to be established at national and regional levels for the environmentally sound management of e-waste. He further mentioned that e-waste collection, exchange and recycling centres should be encouraged in partnership with private entrepreneurs and manufactures. Former Director, Ministry of Environment & Forest Dr. Lakshmi Raghupathy said that an important aspects in the process of compliance of the rules is generating awareness among the stakeholders on the various aspects of the products including the requirement for environmentally sound management of the products. In her detailed presentations, she called upon Producers to come up with well planned awareness programmes regarding the hazardous constituents present in the equipments as well as the safe handling and disposal of the product after its use. She said the producers should provide information on safe handling of the end-of-life product. Presentation was followed by Panel Discussion headed by Sh. Sajjad Mufti, Regional Director SPCB Jammu with other members Mr. Gulzar Qureshi, Director, Industries & Commerce, Mr. Vikrant Kuthiala, J&K Committee, PHD Chamber, J&K, Ms. Neelu Sharma, Principal Scientific Officer, SPCB, Jammu, Ms. Anuradha Gupta, Scientist ‘A’ SPCB, Jammu, Recycler & Ms. Preeti Tiwari, Manager, Attro Recycling (Pvt.) Ltd. & Mr. Lokesh Kumar participated in the discussion. Vote of thanks was presented by Sajjad Mufti, Regional Director, SPCB Jammu. The programme was conducted by Ms. Kanchan Zutshi, Secretary, Env. Comm., PHD Chamber.
