Worth the read!! All year we have been talking about all kinds of things and focusing these last few weeks on how all living things need each other. I decided to ask each of the kids to tell me about a specific topic to see how well they understand this concept. Its incredible how much they pick up in the course of play and talking and being in the garden and the projects we do!!! This is what they have to say re: The Web of Life. Sharks like to eat dolphins and fish. Sharks are not bad because if they dont eat the dolphins there will be too many dolphins. If there are too many dolphins there wont be enough fish for them to eat. The fish will all be dead, then the dolphins will be die and then the sharks will die because they wont have any food either because they need fish and dolphins for food.- Christian, age 4 I dont like bees because they sting you and you cry. But bees are not bad. Bees collect nectar and bring it back to the hive to make honey and feed the babies. Bees get yellow powder stuck on their fuzziness. Then they fly to another flower and the powder comes off on the other flower and seeds grow and new flowers grow. Shayli, age 4 Birds fly in the sky. We have to keep the smoke out of the sky because if there is too much smoke the birds might die because they cant breathe. We need birds because they help our garden grow and the birds eat bugs and if the birds dont eat bugs there will be too much bugs. -Seth, age 4 Spiders are good because they eat mosquitoes and flies. Flies are gross because they go on poop and dead animals. Spiders make webs to catch the bugs. Webs are sticky so the bugs and insects get stuck and the spider eats them for lunch. I saw a spider web at our tree house and it was beautiful. I like the good spiders that dont bite but I dont like the red ones. -Bryce, age 4 We need trees for the animals to live in. Bugs and insects and spiders and squirrels and birds need them to make their nests. Squirrels like to eat nuts. Nuts grow in the trees. Birds like to eat worms and the bugs that live in the tree. They like to eat fruit and fruit grows in trees. Caterpillars like to eat leaves. We need trees to build houses and grow our food because we like to eat fruit and nuts too. If you cut down all the trees there will be no trees left and the animals will die. - Camden, age 4 You find water in lakes and streams and in the sea at the beach. Water comes from the sky and from other water like streams go to the ocean. We need water to drink. Cows, pigs, chickens, cats need water. Ducks and fish and turtles and frogs and whales and octopuses, squids and lots of other animals live in the water. If you put lots of junk and gloppity glop in water everything would die, even trees.
