Worthington’s Sponsored Merthyr & District Darts League 2013/14 Season. Labour Bowl Over The Guest To Go Top With Time And Games Running Out. With games running out fast the defending champions from the Merthyr Labour Club returned to the top of the first division with their aim now to stay there for the remaining weeks of the season and retain their title. As the pressure mounts at the top and bottom of each division every treble hit and doubled missed becomes even more important. “Trebles for show Doubles for dough” it’s now make or break as every dart thrown has a bit more pressure on it. Division One. Guest Keen Bowls Club “A” 0 v Merthyr Labour Club 9. With the current division leaders at the Baili-Glas Inn “B” having their game verses the Lord Raglan “B” called off at the very last minute the Labour Club seized their chance to take top spot with a thumping 9-0 whitewash over their hosts at the Guest Keen Bowls Club “A”. In a match containing some 52 ton-plus scores including 2 x 180 the visitors dominated from start to finish in a bid to retain their title. Wayne Davies 100 & David Rowlands 100.140 took the opening pairs with throw before Teg Powell & M. Evans lost out to Gareth Dunn 100 & Jason Baynham as the Labour went 2-0 up. The excellent Anthony Carstairs 100,180 & Ron Morgan then made it three zip with a hold over Mike Martin & Mark Virgin 120 as the visitors took control of the game. Anthony Carstairs 3x100,121,122 was in great form for the visitors again in the singles with victory over Mike Martin 100,121,140 against the throw and 5-0 then soon appeared on the scoreboard with a superb showing from Wayne Davies 4x100, 125, 140 who beat Mark Virgin 100,121,140. Mark Seggerson 3x100,140 had throw in his match against Gareth Dunn but despite scoring well himself he was out gunned by the Labour Club player who managed 3x100,140,180,118 out to give the visitors a 6-0 lead. Visiting captain David Rowlands 3x100, 2x123,2x140 was in excellent form in his victory over Teg Powell 125 and in game eight A. Benbow managed 3x100 for the Guest but was still found wanting as Ron Morgan 2x100, 140 made it 8-0 against the throw. The final game of the night saw Jason Baynham 119, 2x140 hold his darts against the Guest’s M. Evans to complete a 9-0 whitewash. Mount Pleasant Inn 3 v Horse & Groom 6. This was a highly entertaining played in very good spirit between two evenly matched sides. Wayne Titcombe & Steve Colvin took the opening pairs with throw beating Bobby Terrett & Neil Baldwin to get the Horse up and running but then Derek Dobbins 100 & D. Phelps 2x100 proved too big a hurdle for Steve Nicholas & Steve Thomas 100 apiece as they held throw making it all square at one each. The hold of throw theme continued in the third and final pairs with Phil Williams 100,140 & Brian Nicholas getting the better of John Terrett & Colin Yendle who notched 100 each to earn the Horse a 2-1 lead going into the singles matches. The first of the singles encounters saw Colin Yendle 100,140 have the darts for the home side but the advantage proved to no avail as Steve Thomas 5x100,140 powered in to take the match up and increase the visitors lead to 3-1 lead. Summer League Singles Champion Phil Williams 100,105,120,111 out held throw over Neil Baldwin 2x100 to stretch the lead to 4-1 but there was better news for the home side in game six with D. Phelps 100,125,140 scoring a 2-1 win over Steve Nicholas 100,125,140 to reduce the arrears to two points. Big brother Brian Nicholas 2x100 beat Bobby Terrett by a 2-0 score to give the away side a 5-2 lead but the Mt would not cave in with Derek Dobbins 134,140 getting the better of Steve Colvin 100,140 to pull a point back for the home side. Wonderful Wayne Titcombe 6x100 then took the final match of the contest with a good win over John Terrett 2x100 by a 2-1 margin to complete a fine 6-3 win. Heolgerrig Social Club 4 v Grawen Arms 5. A hard fought game from beginning to end went right to the wire before finally giving a result in the last leg of a match that could have gone either way. Peter Locke & Scott Bayliss took the opening pairs with a hold of throw over Ray Williams & Mike Evans but the lead was short lived with Meirion Evans & Colin Morgan beating Dean Smith & Wayne Gutty to level at 1-1. The final pairs match up saw the first break of throw of the match with Iory Haines & Bob Watkins 180 getting the better of Darren Locke & Phil Locke to take a 2-1 lead going into the match deciding singles. Peter Locke 2x100,141 out levelled the match score with a win over Mike Evans and then the visitors led for a second time with Phil Locke 3x100,140,180 seeing off the challenge of the veteran Iory Haines 2x100,121 for a 3-2 lead with a hold of throw. Colin Morgan 4x100 scored a splendid win over Darren Locke 3x100,114,140 to level at 3-3 but parity was short as Scott Bayliss 2x100,121,140 sprinted past Trad Davies to put the Grawen ahead 4-3. Ray Williams 100, 2x140 squared the match with victory over Dean Smith 4x100 and then in a tense nervy last game Wayne Gutty 2x100 beat Meirion Evans 2x100,125 with the darts to earn the visitors a hard fought win. Troedyrhiw Rx Club 2 v Merthyr Football Club “Seaside” C 7. This match contained some 46 ton-plus scores with the visitors hitting no less than 40 of them which included some 5 x 180’s. Dale Pinch 140 & Justin Davies 2x100 got the ball rolling for the Football Club with victory over Glen Kitchen & D. James and as the visitors lightning start continued Craig Morgan 100 & Paul Thomas100,140 beat Ron Davies & Gary Champion against the throw for a 2-0 lead. The final pairs saw the away side complete a clean sweep with Kevin Hyde & Jamie Evans 100 apiece beating Tony Hedges & G. Butler with a comfortable hold of throw. Jamie Evans 2x100,139,3x140 took the first singles for the away side and then in something of a shock Tony Hedges beat Justin Davies 2x100,121,2x180 to pull a point back for the home side and finally get into the game. Dale Pinch 3x100,2x180 bounced back for the Seasider’s with victory over D. James 125 making it 5-1 before Gary Champion 100,125 edged past Craig Morgan 2x100,121,137,140 gaining the hosts a second point. Paul Thomas 3x100,136,2x140,104 out was in tip top form beating Ron Davies 100 and in the final game Kevin Hyde 2x100,140,180 completed the 7-2 beating Glen Kitchen 121,140. Division Two. Dowlais Con Club 7 v Merthyr Ex Club 4. The match started with both triples legs going against the darts with Jason Davies 3x100 in the second leg leading the charge for the away side. Jason Davies 100 & Wayne O’Neill produced the first hold of throw in the first pairs to beat S. Davies 2x100 & Jimmy Winstone giving the Ex a 2-1 lead which was short lived however as G. Thomas & Jimmy Daley overcame the challenge of John Hobby & Steve Mahoney to square matters and then the Con took the lead with G. Coombs & L. Morgan 2x121 beating Wayne Jones & Rob Phillips 121 going into the singles legs. Wayne Jones 100 beat Jimmy Daley in the first singles against the arrows to level but back came the Con through G. Quirke 100 with a win over John Hobby to lead 4-3. This quickly turned to 5-3 as Jimmy Winstone 3x100 held off Wayne O’Neill and then S. Davies beat Jason Davies making it 6-3. Steve Mahoney scraped past G. Thomas 2x100 to earn a fourth point for the visitors before G. Coombs 2x100 completed the victory with a win over Andrew Davies 100. Baili-Glas Inn “A” 4 v Penydarren Social Club “B” 7. This result was a disaster for the Baili and effectively ended their hope of a quick return to the top division. Things started very badly for the home side with both triples going the way of the visitors with Lyndon Price 100 first leg and Clive Morgan 135 second leg finding the range for the Pen with Alan Mee & Cled Jones 100 apiece replying for the Baili in the second with the home side struggling to hit a double. One disaster after another followed for the hosts as Clive Morgan & Barrie Gilby took the first pairs for Pen beating Nigel Meek & Terry Morgan and a break of throw in the second pairs saw Dai Richards 2x100 & Neil Smith 100 beating Alan Mee & Cled Jones. Missed doubles cost the Baili again in the final pairs as Lyndon Price & Steve Smith edged past Andrew Morgan & Tim Charleston to take a shock 5-0 lead heading into the singles. Nigel Meek 100 finally got the Baili into the match in the first singles with a win over Lyndon Price and the hosts gained another point in the next game with the promising Alan Mee 2x100, 135 getting the better of the veteran Ray Smith. Terry Morgan hung on to beat Dai Richards 2x100 in the eighth game to earn the Baili another point and as the hosts threatened to make a comeback Steve Smith beat Cled Jones putting the away side 6-3 ahead. Wayne Smalldon 139 pulled the tenth leg back for the Baili beating Barrie Gilby and then home sides curse of the winning double continued with Andrew Morgan hitting the wrong ones as Clive Morgan 100 scrapped home in the last leg for a happy Pen side. Morlais Tavern “A” 6 v Aberfan Social Club “A” 5. This was an almighty battle from start to finish with both sides battling hard for all available points. Both triples matches went against the darts with Lloyd Davies 140 & Charles Davies 100 first leg and Kevin Downing 100 second leg on target for Aberfan with G. Giles 140 first leg and Jason Gillespie 140 second leg finding the range for the home side. B. Roberts 140,180 & G. Giles took the opening pairs for the Morlais again against the throw beating Warren Rees 2x100 & Kevin Downing but back came the away side through Charles Davies & Peter Emmanuel 135 to oust A. Norbury100 & I. Evans 100 to square matters at 2-2. Yet another break of throw in the final pairs contest saw G. Scott 2x100 & J. Gillespie beat Lloyd Davies 100 & Ken Davies to nudge the hosts into a 3-2 lead ahead of the vital singles. B. Roberts 100 produced the first hold of throw of the match to beat Lloyd Davies 100 and put the home side 4-2 with G. Giles 135 then overcoming the challenge of Warren Rees 100 to make it 5-2. Kevin Downing beat A. Norbury 2x100 against the throw to pull a third point back for the visitors and keep them in with a slim chance of winning the match but this was extinguished in the next game with Jason Gillespie beating Charles Davies to make it 6-3. The visitors did however take the last two games through Peter Emmanuel and the up and coming Ken Davies 140 with victories over G. Scott 100 and Nigel Bees respectively. Division Three. Colliers Arms 4 v Guest Keen Bowls Club “B” 7. The Guest B were quickly into the match taking both triples for a 2-0 lead going into the pairs legs which saw the home side fight back with Martin Firth 100 & Damion Lewis 125 taking the first over A. Coombs & C. Rees 100 and D. Thomas 100,140 & Keith Lewis adding the second with a fine win over Wayne Robinson & W. Harris to level at 2-2. T. Pollard & C. Jones then regained the lead for the Guest taking the last pairs with a fine win over Martin Treen 100 & John Jones. A. Coombs took the first singles against the throw with victory over John Jones 125 making it 4-2 and then a fine win from T. Pollard 2x100 advanced the score to 5-2. Evergreen Keith Lewis 100 pulled the eighth leg back for the Colliers to keep them in the hunt but the Guest then bagged a bargain with Wayne Robinson 100,140 beating Damion Lewis to make it 6-3. The last two points were shared between the sides with D. Thomas taking leg ten for the hosts and C. Rees the last for the visitors. Angel Hotel 5 v Merthyr Vale Ex Club (Daggers) 6. This local (ish) derby saw the Daggers travel upstream to the Angel where both sides put in a great display in a highly entertaining game. Both triples legs went the way of the visitors as they made a great start to the match and things got even better in the pairs with the pairings of J. Tarr/Steve Probert 100 apiece & Steve Llewellyn 180/Harry Morgan 100 claiming wins over J. Pugh/B. Morgan & M. Davies/Glen Callan to go 4-0 ahead. M. Jones & Steve George then finally got the hosts into the game with victory over G. Robertson & K. Robertson in the final pairs leg. J. Tarr 140 added to the visitors tally taking the first singles against M. Davies 140 and then a fine 100 out from M. James saw him pull a second point back for the Angel with victory over Steve Probert. Great wins for G. Hancock and J. Pugh 100,132 over Steve Llewellyn 100,113 and Harry Morgan 100 saw the home side pull back to within a point before G. Robertson made it safe for the Daggers. B. Morgan 134 took the final leg for a battling Angel side. Division Four. Dynevor Arms 8 v Lord Raglan “A” 3. The Dyn gave the visiting Lord A a warm welcome taking both triples legs and then adding the first pairs through B. Edwards & N. Jones 140 who scored a fine win over Terry Barnett & L. Thomas before the Lord got into the match with a win from Alan Driscoll & Bryn Lewis who beat S. O’Sullivan & Edwin Jones 140. M. Edwards & K. Lloyd then made short change of Dai Davenport & Mike McLoughlin to put the home side into a 4-1 heading into the singles games. .B.Edmunds beat Dai Davenport in the first singles encounter increasing the lead to 5-1 and then a good performance from N. Jones saw him advance the score to 6-1 . Alan Driscoll pulled a second leg back for the visitors beating M. Edwards but then good arrows from S. O’sullivan 135 and Edwin Jones saw them claim good wins over L. Thomas and Bryn Lewis respectively. The last leg went the way of the Lord through Terry Barnett, who with practice has a bright future in the game, as he scored a fine win over K. Lloyd. Merthyr Football Club “B” 4 v VNU 7. This was an excellent win for the VNU on the road as they went to the Football Club “B”. The visitors took the opening triples with throw with Errold Jones & Eddie Cunnington 140 apiece leading the charge but the home side hit back in the second with T. Harris 100 & Ian Laing 140 helping them draw level. All three pairs legs were won by the home side Simon Marks 140 & T. Harris 100 taking the first with a win over Errold Jones & D. Clayton and then further wins for the pairings of Ian Laing/T. Laing 100 apiece & D. Hopkin 128/J. Rees making it 4-1 going into the singles and looking very comfortable. The singles however provided a complete turnaround with Eddie Cunnington 100 taking the first and then Errold Jones 121 beating Simon Jones 2x100 in a vital leg. Further wins for K. Howe 10, Mark Hadley and Clive Powell saw the sides draw level setting up a thrilling deciding last leg. Ian Laing 100,121 was in good form for the hosts but he was just piped by D. Clayton 140 who won a great match for a relived VNU. Winchester Bar 6 v Farmers Arms “A” 5. This was a shock result for the Farmers A as they chase for promotion to division three. Things started well for the visitors as they took both triples legs with John Thomas rounding up 2x100 in the opening game. D. Davies 2x100 & Anthony Lennon 140 took the first of the pairs legs against John Thomas 140 & Dai Jones to get the Winch into the match and further victories for John Andrews/Andrew Morgan 140 & Paul James/T. Williams 140 saw the game turn as the Winch edged into a 3-2 going into the singles. Wayne Morgan 100 took the first singles against the darts to level the match and then the visitors took the lead again with John Thomas 100,140 beating Andrew Morgan. Gary Price made it 5-3 to the Farmers putting them one point away from victory but the trator then ran out of gas as Anthony Lennon 128 out on the bull, Eugene Wells and T. Williams 87 out on the bull beat Dai Jones, Rhion Evans and Mike Terrett in order to win a thrilling match in the very last leg. Division Five. Silver Bullet 6 v Colliers Cwtch “A” 5. Excitement from start to finish with the game going to the final match. The Cwtch A started very well taking both triples legs and then they added the first pairs through Martin Jones &. P. Beck for a comfortable looking three nil lead. Enter Chris Davies & Anthony Morris who shock up and woke up the home side to get them into the game by taking the second pairs leg for their first point. Steffan (Van) Williams 100 & Brian Birch then beat J. Watts & R. Davies in the last pairs to leave the home side trailing by just one point going into the singles. A. Beck 100,135 took the first singles against the darts beasting Cael Howells to make it 4-1 and when J. Watts made it 5-1 in beating Brian Birch things looked all over for the Bullet. Not so, Neil Winstone fired back beating P. Beck and further wins for Owain Pugh 100,115 and Chris Davies 100 saw the sides draw level. A thrilling last leg then saw Anthony Morris 100 break the throw of Martin Jones to seal a fantastic fight back and victory for the quick fire Bullet . Llwyn-Yr-Eos Inn 6 v Cardigan Arms 5. This was a great battle from the very first dart to the last with both sides giving their all in the quest for promotion. The Cardi took both triples in a solid start by the visitors with Craig Clayton 140 leading the way. The pairs match ups saw the Llwyn get into the game with L. Foley & J. Davies beating Mark Edwards & Robert Roberts against the throw in the first and D. Thomas & F. Murphy victorious in the second. Craig Clayton 2x100 & Connor Clayton then regained the lead for the Cardi with victory over the old guard of Tyrone Day & Alan Foley to be 3-2 up heading into the singles. D. Thomas levelled the contest with a hold of throw over Craig Clayton 100 before Nathan Price 100 nudged the visitors back in front at 4-3. F. Murphy 100 and L. Foley turned the tables with great wins over Connor Clayton and Bernard Clayton respectively but back again came the Cardi through Kevin Cresswell to level at 5-5 with victory over Tyrone Day to set up a last leg shootout. Alan Foley was up the Llwyn and would face Mark Edwards of the Cardi who is no stranger to a last leg battle. In a thrilling game Alan broke the throw of Mark and the hearts of the Cardi to earn the hosts a narrow hard fought and vital win.
