Would there be another Tour De Malaysia Run at the end of this - TopicsExpress

Would there be another Tour De Malaysia Run at the end of this year? At the end of 2013, 4 core runners, Allan Lee, Ng Seow Kong, Rich Cai, and Lee Yee Aun took upon themselves to run around Peninsula Malaysia. They were joined by about 70 registered guest runners (and many other unregistered runners/pacers) in completing the feat of running a non-stop relay of almost 11 days over a distance of about 2,100km. It would be the first of its kind in the world where a non-stop relay would last for so many days and nights, and over such a great distance. It was greeted with great enthusiasm and support from the running communities around the country, and many have since waiting in anticipation of the 2014 edition. The 2013 concept built around the self funding concept of the core runners, and also that of the guest runners. The 4 core runners forked out may be about RM3,000~RM 4,000 per person for their 11 days on the road, covering expenses like petrol, food, accommodation and other miscellaneous items. Even the certificates for the guest runners were paid by the 4 core runners. The guest runners took care of their own food, transport and accommodation, and crew support where applicable. Having realizing the dream of running around Peninsula Malaysia, what would be the motivation for the 4 core runners to spend the same time and money repeating the same experience again this year? The 4 core runners would probably want to do something else instead. Unless there are others who are prepared to step up to be the 4 (or more) core runners again this year, then they can of course organize a similar run like last year. However, knowing from 2013 experience, not many runners can afford to take the 11 days leave to be on the road. Some may not be able to find sufficient crew members to support them for that long on the road too. We ourselves would like to promote this as a yearly event, but we need this event to be funded by the runners (all runners) and potential sponsors (either governmental or corporate) for it to be financially sustainable. In the possible absence of core runners, the concept of TDMR would need to be modified. NEW CONCEPT Tour De Malaysia Run – Mark II Start Date : 10th pm, 19th Dec 2015 Finish Date: 30th Dec 2015 Start/Finish Point: Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur Race Concept: • Non-stop relay; • Total Distance ~ 2,100km; • Each sector is around 50k; • There are altogether 43 sectors; • Runners will register for the sectors they are interested to run in; • Runners will be grouped into teams so that each team will be responsible for running all the 43 sectors around Peninsula Malaysia; • If more than one team is possible to be formed, then there is a race between these teams to finish the whole TDMR run in the fastest time; • Only one runner from each team may run in any one sector at a time; • Runners may run as many sectors as they like but back to back sector run will not be encouraged in the interest of the race progress; • Pacer will be allowed to accompany the runner, but need to pay a fee to pace along (pacer can always registered as a normal runner if they seriously like to be part of the RUN); • Those who are interested in joining in can always register as Runner; • Each team will be coordinated and monitored by a team leader who will act as back up runner for the team i.e. to run certain sectors in remote areas, or to stand in to run for those runners who could not make it for whatever reasons; • The team leader will follow the runners from sector to sector as the race progress along; • There will be an Overall Race Director for TDMR; • Each runner is supposed to provide his/her own logistic support in terms of food, drinks, transportation and accommodation before, during and after running his/her particular sector; • Registration Fee: RM 125 per person; • What is the Runners’ Registration Fee is supposed to cover: o Team Leader’s (backup runners) food, transportation and accommodation expenses for the 11-12 days on the road; o Race Director’s food, transportation and accommodation expenses for the 11-12 days on the road; o Administrative expenses in applying for permits, meetings among race directors and team leaders; o Compensation to the Race Director and Team Leaders in organizing the Run, and spending the 11-12 days on the road; • Sponsorship will be actively sought after to supplement the Registration Income if only 1 team can be formed If there’s not sufficient sponsorship, the project may not go ahead because the RM 150 registration fee per runner is clearly not sufficient to cover the expenses for the Team Leader/Back Up Runners and Race Director, which will be made up of mainly the 4 core runners for 2013. So, runners in Malaysia and from other countries, please indicate your interest in taking on this challenge in running around Peninsula Malaysia under the above concept? Or you have any good ideas how the above concept might be improved upon to make it viable, operationally and financially? We welcome your ideas to make this years run a reality. P/S 1: Details of the 43 sectors will be published later for runners to register their interests. P/S 2: We will rename this run as The Great Peninsula Run.
