Writers Write November is When Your Novel Happens Could you write a novel in a month? November is National Novel Writing Month. NaNoWriMo has become a phenomenon. It is web-based and really natty – or, as they say these days, innovative. NaNoWriMo challenges participants to write 50 000 words of a new novel between 1 November and 30 November. Why do it? The goal of NaNoWriMo is to get people writing, no matter how bad the writing is, through the end of a first draft. The idea is that many people are scared to start writing because it won’t be any good, and if there’s a time to celebrate quantity, rather than quality, more people will write an entire first draft. They can then edit if they wish. Has anyone been published after participating? Some famous novels started at NaNoWriMo including Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen – which was turned into a great movie with Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon, The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, Persistence of Memory by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, and Cuckoo by Julia Crouch.
