X Factor Review - March 24th 2014 - by Stephanie St James The Emerald Isle must be very proud to have hosted tonights ever popular X Factor competition, and as always, Sunshine FM was thrilled to present an excited audience with some amazing talent that, quite frankly was over and above anyones expectations. At this level of the competition, it becomes more and more dramatic as impressive artists demonstrate their eagerness to wow the crowd. Tonight all six performers took to the stage with a renewed confidence that we, as judges, hadnt seen before. With just a few more weeks to go before the finals, there was definitely a battle in the air. Opening the show tonight was the beautiful Deja who sang an Aretha Franklin classic. All judges remarked on the bubbly personality that formed the basis of both Dejas performances. My fellow judge, Eva Ford, commented on how Dejas second song Aint no Other Man by Christina Aguilera, demonstrated her sheer liveliness and energy. Next up was someone we all remember with such fondness. Maria repeatedly stuns the audience with her beauty and elegance. Whilst I was not the judge with the expert opinion on Marias Flamenco dance performance, I was completely spellbound. Fellow judge, Jay Markwick - a well-known expert performer in Flamenco dance, was able to deliver some super helpful comments to Maria who listened carefully to what Jay had to say. Marias second performance, also very polished, won further acclaim and further useful comments Following Maria onto the stage was a petite, young lady by the name of Janelle. Whilst, as always, Janelle delivered a stirring number directly to the crowd, it was with some caution that the judges remarked. With a total keenness for Janelle to remain in the competition, Im afraid I offered just a little negative criticism as I urged her to be careful not to over sing and my own comments were echoed by Eva. Janelles second song was unpredictable but a good choice. Clearly she had gone away and thought hard about her focus and control - this time around we heard more natural tones and Jay remarked on Janelles amazing stage presence A dramatic and breathtaking act followed as the very accomplished dancer, Antonio, silenced the audience with two captivating performances. Impossible to believe but all three judges believed he was even more impressive than before. Eva described his movement as being soft and yet so, so fierce. Further, she discussed with Jay how she felt as if it was almost not a routine but something he was feeling. Jay described both of Antonios performances as professional and really quite perfect. All in all, rather intoxicating Id say! It was now time for the lovely Gemma to appeal to the audience and the judges. She did just that with first her song choice; At Last by Etta James although I was quite nervous as its one of my all time favourites. Both Eva and Jay remarked on how they thought Gemmas vocals were some of the strongest in the whole competition. For me, I just needed her to bring a little more shimmer and glimmer, from her wardrobe, onto the stage. The still strongaudience certainly appreciated the second performance as Gemma delivered the upbeatversion of Heaven Must be Missing an Angel which was originally sung by Tavares almost 40 years ago. One of Gemmas nicest attributes is her modesty which prevails throughout. The final artist to perform tonight was Paula. Paula has exhibited a great sense of showmanship with her sporting and valiant appearances on stage, despite being knocked back a few times, throughout this competition, with rather daunting comments from the judging panel. Paula genuinely loves music, loves song and loves to sing - that is clear. She also has a fantastic appeal with her gentle and loveable personality. Unfortunately those attributes didnt replace the necessary ability to really sing well for this title and Paula sadly left the main string of contestants tonight. However, we are all hoping that she will return to the X Factor in a few weeks time to compete for the Wild Card which, if she is chosen, would mean she is back - running for the title! Many, many thanks must go to the wonderful audience who return week after week to support this compelling event which actually has a far greater level of talent than you would imagine and .... gives London a run for its money!
