Yes I am a veteran. I served 12 years from 1965 to 1977. I was called off of annual leave to stand by for the Israel 6 day war, but we were never sent over. I flew into war zones as air crew and one of our crews (fortunately not mine) was shot down in the Middle East while flying a UN peacekeeping mission. I saw the dust from shell impacts on an approach into Beiruit and saw the ground to air missiles slowly ark following our track into Ismalleia Egypt. I was stopped at gun point in road blocks in Nicosia Cypress and Cairo Egypt. We had to declare a mayday and land at Quajalein atoll in the mid pacific with an engine out. That is a US proving ground for nuclear bombs. We were quarantined in the barracks and not allowed out till our plane was fixed. We had critical fuel shortage going into Madrid one time ...the engines were so fuel starved a couple quit as we taxied in. We had a serious load imbalance over the mid Atlantic and myself and the flight engineer hand bombed about 5000 lbs of freight thru a small crawl space to get the plane trimmed up. we had to land in NYC to take on fuel to finish the trip to Trenton Ontario. i fell out of a plane once during a battle break manoeuvre with the ramp and door open. Glad my parachute worked! I guess i had an exiting life. Gees, what can i do for an encore?
