Yesterday was a special day for Saving Downs! Yesterday, Mike - TopicsExpress

Yesterday was a special day for Saving Downs! Yesterday, Mike Sullivan, the founder of SD met with some of the admin team from the UK. This was special because Mike normally resides in New Zealand, and is holidaying in the UK this month. So, it was planes, trains and automobile enabling everyone to get to a meet-up which has been in the planning for some months. But thats where the extraordinary ends. Getting together gave us an opportunity to share our own experiences with DS. For those of us for whom birth experience is a distant memory it was unfortunate to hear that old fashioned ideas about DS still exist, actually, Richard Dawkins comments about Down Syndrome is a recent case in point, so we shouldnt be surprised that some archaic ideas are still around the Antenatal and Postnatal arenas. For those with younger children they were pleased to hear about barriers being broken down by older children, perhaps making things a bit easier for their children in the future. So coming back to normality today; being greeted by Mum, I was annoyed, cos my phone broke yesterday.. reminds me that - a) life for people with DS is much, much improved b) we need to get that message out there and work hard to change the monolithic systems that still exhibit old-fashioned ideas and helps perpetrate them. Fortunately, weve come home inspired by Diane Blackmores Follow Your Dreams Charity and its patrons. Follow Your Dreams supports parents of people with disabilities; employs people with learning disabilities and has Patrons and Ambassadors who have learning disabilities! Theyve even started a project to go out to convince employers that people with learning disabilities can be very employable! Food for thought and hope for the future ! Saving Downs is back at work, thank you to everyone who works to help promote positive awareness for the condition called Down Syndrome; which only tells a part of anyones story. Today is the beginning of the rest of our lives, with the right attitudes this will also apply to any babies diagnosed today with Down Syndrome. P.S. It looks like the phone can be repaired, crisis averted!
