Yesterday was run errands day, specifically go forth and gather water filters. We utilize rain water as our source of this precious material. The rain falls from the sky, runs down our roofs and is conveyed by gravity to our cisterns. From there its pumped to the house where we bush our teeth and do the laundry, amongst other things. Rainwater is filthy, every horrible thing we humans pump into the atmosphere ends up in the rain. Indiana rainfall has been described as being an acidic toxin. The PH is higher than salad dressing. This is the same water that fills our reservoirs and provides most of Indianas drinking water. In response, Becky and I use a series of filters to improve the quality of the water we use. By the time it gets to the ice cube stage, the water has run through seven different filters, and yesterday was go get some more filters day. It was a beautiful day to go to town. Along my way just outside of B-town on old 37, I saw a young painted turtle crossing the road in front of me, and hit the breaks. There was a truck about two car lengths behind me that pulled past while I sat there. The fellow in the passenger seat let me know how much he disapproved by shouting a few curse words at me while offering up the one finger salute as they drove past as fast as they could. They must have been on their way to something really important. After their departure, I got out of the car and the young turtle was inches from my tire. I picked him up and carried him over to the creek and admonished him to be more careful because apparently, the natives are restless, and wished him luck as I released him. Later at the big box, I ran into my friend Charlie and we had a fine conversation in the parking lot about the forest plan and the work were doing to stop it. The forest is like that young turtle in the road, and the DNR is the speeding pick up recklessly charging ahead without regard for life. Its up to us to slow down the process and save as much of this precious resource as we can, one turtle at a time.
