...York Minster... - one of the finest medieval buildings in Europe, the site on which it sits has changed much over the years, and been occupied by many different buildings, but it has always been an important site in the settlement now called York. “York Minster has stood at the heart of the city for centuries, but even before that, this site was instrumental in the growth of York, from a military barracks into a major conurbation. This means that the land upon which the cathedral now stands has been a centre – military, political, social and theological – for that whole time, influencing not only regional but national history,” comments the Dean of York, the Very Reverend Vivienne Faull. The remains of the ceremonial heart of the Roman Fortress of Eborucum, the Basilica and barracks, were found under the Minster in excavations, and can now be seen in the ‘Revealing York Minster’ attraction in the Undercroft – along with Anglo-Saxon, Norman and Viking remains, amongst other things, telling much of the history and story of this influential site. The Minster itself is amazing to visit, but dont miss out the Undercroft, its well worth your attention if you’re ever in York!
