bin 312 Free Tasting Tonight, Thur., Sept 18th, 5 - 8 pm Autumn We have already passed the mid-point of September. Amazing! Local colleges and universities are back, the weather has turned cool and crisp, football has returned and soon the leaves will turn and our lawns and gardens will be dormant. Autumn in New England is spectacular. Visits to Newport and Block Island for fantastic food and natural beauty are a must. A journey to the beach should also be considered. The water is still very warm so a refreshing dip on a mild afternoon can be a pleasant surprise. Explore the historic neighborhoods of Providence and the fantastic galleries, restaurants and eclectic shops in the city. Escape to the country for some apple picking at one of the many orchards around the state. Attend one or more Autumn Festivals, like the SoMa (South Main Street) Autumn Fest Saturday, September 27th. Or attend a fantastic wine tasting complete with great food, fun and friendship like ours tonight (Thursday, Sept. 18th from 5 to 8 pm). Here is what we will be pouring: Claude Branger Muscadet Les Fils Gras Moutons Sur Lie, 2013 ($14.99), Loire, France Muscadet Les Fils Gras Moutons Sur Lie is the domaine’s entry wine, and it’s one of the truly great buys out there. These vines average 35 years of age, which is amazing for just the domaine’s entry level wine. The wine rests on the lees for six to seven months before bottling leading to a depth and richness not found in many Muscadets. 2012 Castaño Rosado ($11.99) Spain Rosés are finally being treated with the respect and admiration they deserve. Many of the Rosés of today are floral, pleasant, fruit forward but dry and elegant. These are serious wines to be enjoyed as an aperitif or with a light meal. Confusion with the strawberry shortcake of wine, white zinfandel, has been minimized – finally. The response from our Rosé offerings this spring and summer has been outstanding - so much so that we intend to have many of our more robust favorites around year round. 2012 Viu Manent Malbec Gran Reserva ($13.99), Chile Most associate Malbec as a wine from Argentina. However, quality Malbec can also be found from France and Chile. We have tasted well over 100 Malbecs in trying to find and maintain just a dozen for our racks and this gem is one of the wines that continues to make the cut. The Gran Reserva bottling represents a selection of favorable parcels within the Viu Manent vineyards. Black Pearl 2011 ($19.99) A few nights ago a small group of friends walked in the bin and remarked on how our shelves were filled with so many wines not seen anywhere else. As we talked they decided to open one such bottle, a South African Cabernet Sauvignon (94%) with a touch of Syrah (6%). Within 20 minutes of finishing the bottle, the group returned to round up an additional 8 bottles. The wine is full-bodied and richly textured well beyond its less than $20 price tag. Only 2000 cases were made of this highly rated customer favorite.
