chugga chugga chugga Hey ... whats that sound? Chugga Chugga Chugga Chugga I hear something ... do you hear something? CHUGGA CHUGGA CHUGGA CHUGGA Oh! Its coming! Here it comes!! CHUGGA CHUGGA CHUGGA CHOOOOO CHOOOO!!! THE HYPE TRAIN IS ROLLING IN!! ALL ABOARD!!!!!! The HoloLens from Microsoft has got to be the funnest waste of marketing dollars Ive seen ... in the last few hours. The trouble is, Microsoft is nowhere near as close to being done with their product as Facebook (er, I mean Oculus Rift) is to being done with theirs, and Facebook isnt even close. There is no way that the HoloLens is going to ship with Windows 10, and the fancy camera tricks used in their commercials are there to hide a lack of technical information which by itself should tell anybody with even a passing familiarity with this business that the HoloLens is a Microsoft me-tooism to show that theyre still an industry leader and are just as capable of throwing money at VR in hopes that some trained monkeys will throw marketable technology back as the other big players who I think all have no idea what theyre doing, just like last time. (VR was promised back in the 90s too. And wheres my flying car?) Unfortunately, just because one woman can grow a baby to be ready for birth in nine months doesnt mean that two women can do it in four and a half. This is going to take YEARS to develop no matter how much money Microsoft has. Well probably be on Windows 12 (or, if Microsoft stays true to their history, itll be called Windows QZ or something else just as completely random) by the time we get consumer versions of the HoloLens, and when we do, they wont be anything like Microsofts pretty commercials. But despite all of that, its nice that another candidate has thrown their hat into the ring to run for Virtual Reality Corporate King sometime in the coming decade. I just hope that whoever wins, they embrace open standards and their kingdom is more than their own default apps plus a few shoddy ports from mainstream games.
