INTRODUCTION During the first Sunday I did expose the theme for the year 2015 and also the quarterly themes. The theme for this year 2015 is Proclaiming “The Year of the LORD’S Favour – ISAIAH 61:1- 3 (Kulalikira Chaka Cokomera Yehova) The theme for January to March 2015 is “God who liberates us in a number of things (Liberation) Mulungu amene atimenyela nkhondo (Kumasulidwa)” In particular the theme for this Sunday is ‘LIBERATION FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT PERSPECTIVE – EXODUS’ 2. BACKGROUND OF THE BOOK OF EXODUS Authorship: the book is attributed to Moses Date: around 1400/1200 B.C Sources: ‘book of the Covenant’ (24:4,7) Occasion: need for God’s chosen people to 1. Understand how they were formed as a nation through God’s mighty deliverance out of Egypt celebrated in the Feast of Pssover, and 2. Understand God’s laws, ordinances and statutes which they were to obey as His people Title: Exodus - Hebrew: shemoth (names) - Greek: exodus (way out) Theme: the deliverance and redemption which gave birth to a nation chosen of God to be His people Purpose: to record how God delivered Israel out of slaverly in Egypt in order to enter in to covenant with them as His people through whom His nature and salvation was to be shown to a wayward world. 3. TEXT IN FOCUS: EX.5-6:1-30 5:1-22 • The passage shows the stableness of Pharaoh by not releasing the Israelites • Moses told Pharaoh to ‘let the people GO’v1b, • No matter the command of God to allow the people go, Pharaoh vehemently refused, and he added more work for the Israelites, vv6-14, and he called them ‘lazy’ v17 • The Israelites were asked to make bricks by collecting their own STRAW,v7 6:1-30 • God assures Moses that he deliver the Israelites with His mighty hand, vv1-4 • God would remember his covenant and then redeem his people, vv5-6 • The chapter also shows the plan of God to deliver all the family of Moses and Aaron, vv13-30 4. DEFINITION OF THE WORDS/SYNONYMS: ‘LIBERATION FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT PERSPECTIVE – EXODUS’ LIBERATION - To be released from bondage - Freedom - Emancipation - Deliverance - Freedom - Liberty OT-EXODUS - Mass departure - Evacuation - Move out 5. WHAT IS GOD’S PLAN FOR HUMAN BEINGS IN THE AREA OF LIBERATION 5.1 GOD WILL FULLFILL HIS COVENANT In the midst of tribulations, trials, hard times, unbearable situations, God would still want to fulfill His covenant with people. In chapter 5:1-21; Pharaoh made the life of the Israelites hard, very hard. This is what Pharaoh did to make life hard for the Israelites: - Straw was not going to be provided,5:7,10-12 - They were to make the same number of bricks even though straw was not supplied, 5:8 - He called them ‘lazy’, 5:8c, 17-28 - He made work harder, 5:9,13-14 Regardless of what the Israelites passed through, God remembered His covenant he made. What is a COVENANT? An agreement (see the quotation below:- - QUOTE “The Greek word διαθηκη (diatheke), usually translated “covenant” in English versions of the Bible, is a legal term denoting a formal and legally binding declaration of benefits to be given by one party to another, with or without conditions attached. In secular contexts it was most often used of a “last will and testament.” In the Greek version of the Old Testament διαθηκη was used as the ordinary rendering for the Hebrew word ברית. - ברית (berith) is also translated “covenant” in English versions, but, like διαθηκη, it also refers to legal dispositions or pledges which may or may not have the character of an “agreement.” Sometimes a ברית is more in the nature of a one-sided promise or grant.” {bible-researcher/covenant.html;22/01/15, time: 12:47]” TYPES OF COVENANT - There are many types of covenants but I will stick to two below: A. CONDITIONAL - This is a covenant which has conditions attached - The covenant of God which starts with ‘I will do this…. If you the following - This is the kind of covenant which are followed by curses if one does not do as requested. B. UNCONDITIONAL - This is the covenant which God gives and it has no conditions attached - With this God commits Himself to do everything. God says, ‘I will do this….i will bless you, I will give you this land…. (Gen.12:1-3) WHAT WAS GOD’S COVENANT? - The pledge and agreement he made with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and other fore fathers of Israel. God promised that he we would one day be with Abraham and his generation, Gen.15:1,5-6,12-16,18-20 - God promised to deliver the Israelites out of slaverly WHAT IS GOD’S COVENANT FOR US TODAY? - God’s love for humans - God’s forgiveness - God’s deliverance - God’s blessings - God’s healing - God’s breakthrough - God’s presence - God’s favor - God will never destroy us but defend and protect us - God’s provisions We need to believe in God’s covenant. God will never forget his covenant he made for us. Claim His covenant this year and it shall come to pass. His a God of covenant. 5.2 GOD WILL REDEEM HIS PEOPLE God pledged/promised the Israelites that He would redeem them from slavery, 6:7 What is to REDEEM? To purchase back; to ransom; to liberate or rescue from captivity or bondage, or from any obligation. To repurchase what has been sold; to regain possession of a thing alienated, by repaying the value of it to the possessor. To compensate or make amends; to pay the penalty of someone and to save someone. GOD REDEEMED US FROM WHAT? a. God has redeemed us from trouble b. God has redeemed us from sin through his son Jesus c. God has redeemed us from death d. God has redeemed us from poverty e. God has redeemed us from the devil’s plan f. God has redeemed us from generational curses God already did his work for us; he paid the price for us to be free. All we need to do is to believe in God and claim our redemption in Jesus name. God is a God of Redemption, in whatever he plans, He will not forget to redeem us. Infact, God redeemed us through Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen 5.3 GOD’S DELIVERANCE PLAN IS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY – 6:13-27 God’s deliverance plan God had was for the whole family. The Israelites were divided in to family or divisions. God sent Moses and Aaron to deliver all the families left in the Egypt as slaves. The plan of God was to liberate the Israelites as family. Similarly, God’s plan today is the family. My family and your family. God would want to save: - Fathers - Mothers - Children - Extended families For this reason we must not leave each other behind as family members. If they are still leaving in sin, we must bring them to the Lord as well. Therefore as family members let us do the following: - Talk to each other in the family about Christ - Pray for each other as family members - Once in awhile have family prayers and fellowship - Rebuke one another on the wrong done for this will correct someone as we go on - We must believe for God’s salvation even for the worst person in our family - We must love, forgive each other, reunite as family members - We must curse each other by words but wish each other well as family members - Lastly we must support each other financially, spiritually and physically as family members God sent Moses and Aaron to save and deliver the Israelites from bondage. His plan was to save the entire ‘FAMILY OF ISRAEL’. Even our family, nuclear and extended family, God has a plan to liberate us from curses. My advice to you is to pray that our whole family is liberated. 6. CONCLUSION In 2015 put in your prayer list the following: The Lord to fulfill His covenant in our lives and families The Lord to Redeem us, our families from bondage and curses The Lord to liberate our families from generational curses and to save our families from sins in order to be born again Finally, do not forget God planned deliverance for us even before we were born.
