[ Gillespie understates humorously when he refers to The Newsroom as THIS SANCTIMONIOUS DRAMA . . . . ] The Newsroom inevitably brings to mind M . S . N . B . C . about which : why bother watching Sorkin s fictional version of terminally - indignant - propagandists - attempting - to - pass - themselves - off - as - a - news - network when one can watch [ if one really cares to ! ] the real thing ? M . S . N . B . C . has far more unintentional humor , especially when AL SHARPTON is the host . It is a wonder that Gillespie and reason didn t cite any of the pompous habitual lecturing from P . B . S . , most especially BILL MOYER S JOURNAL . I d never heard of CAPTAIN PLANET AND THE PLANETEERS , which has the em - bare - ass - ing - ly cheesy look , and sound , that one expects of cartoons intended for the prepubescent set . That it was cheesy environmentalist propaganda created with impressionable small children in mind is odious ; chronic N . A . S . A . blowhard JAMES HANSON doubtless approves , as does ROBERT KENNEDY Jr . I m loath to give any opinion about STAR TREK or 2 4 , neither of which I ve ever seen . However , it is ironic to point out that 2 4 was one of the programs well - liked by UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT ASSOCIATE JUSTICE ANTONIN SCALIA , for whom Nick Gillespie ought to give thanks - as do I - for his consistent support of the FIRST AMENDMENT in [ to cite just two ] McCONNELL VS . FEDERAL ELECTION COMMISSION and CITIZENS UNITED , along with his vote in a losing cause when the High Court decided against SUZETTE KELO . As for MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL : the presence of the late HOWARD COSELL made M . N . F . so hard to bear , I largely gave up watching . I have my own animus against the National Football League , so I rarely watch a game from start to finish . although I try to access the BOX SCORES every weekend . Pro Football , as GREGG EASTERBROOK pointed out last year in an article that appeared in THE ATLANTIC , does in fact epitomize some of the worst features of CRONY CAPITALISM , not least the N . F . L . s unusually small taxation ; the very generous subsidies provided N . F . L . franchises by communities anxious to entice them [ or desperate to keep them ! ] ; and the supremely lavish cash awards presented the league s thirty - two teams by television networks . All of which has the compliant blessing of the Federal Government , whose designation of the N . F . L. for ANTI - TRUST EXEMPTION made Congress complicit in the league s reactionary opposition to FREE AGENCY , particularly when the late PETE ROZELLE was Commissioner . On the other gland , the stupidity and the incompetence of current commissioner ROGER GOODELL almost make Rozelle sympathetic by comparison . . . .
