in Flanders Fields... remembering the Great War... On August 4th 1914, Germany invaded Belgium on its way to attack France. On August 12th they were temporarely stopped on the river Gete near the small town of Halen in the east of Flanders. 2400 Belgian and 6000 German cavalrymen fought the Battle of the Silver Helmets, which was the last real cavalry battle ever in Western Europe.
