my letter to John Key. Dear John Key As a gay man living in New - TopicsExpress

my letter to John Key. Dear John Key As a gay man living in New Zealand I am free from the type of persecution being given to the gay people of Russia. I am lucky that the only abuse I have to face is the odd shout of “dirty queer, fag, poof”. I am lucky that the police at least pay lip service to gay rights and seek out some of those who commit hate crimes against my community. My gay brothers and sisters in Russia do not have anyone standing in their defence. I would like to know what you are doing to help stop this hatred before it goes even further. Many times in the history of the world countries have stood by and watched as one group after another was persecuted, robbed, beaten and finally killed because of who they are. It happened in the 1930’s, the world stood by and watched Hitler decimated the Jewish race. It happened in Yugoslavia and Rwanda. Are we no better today? Are you going to stand there and watch as men and women are beaten, raped and murdered for the crime of being gay. What are you going to do? Will you stand with those that commit these crimes or the people suffering the abuse? By standing by and saying nothing you (by default) are condoning the politicians who made these hate laws, you stand with the thugs handing out the punishments. You stand with the killers of young men and women. We all need to speak out against this now, before the new concentration camps open, before the gas chambers are re built. This may sound fanciful, but isn’t that what the world said back in 1939? So again I ask you, what are you going to do to stop this? Yours sincerely Robert Trimmer.
