now you might be asking what am i doing with 2 really beautiful great pyrenees.when we have two wonderful breed rescues here in houston that try and take all of the ones that come into the shelters here, actually these were not two dogs i was expecting to take in this week..so here is the story.. i got an email from one of my long time friends.. of 34 years no less..we go way back... but dont get to see each other that often anymore she moved to the county many years ago and lives on 7 acres she used to do a lot of independent rescue.. meaning she was not a 501 (3) (c) non profit and could not pull from the shelters, but in the country in texas people dump dogs all of the time and she rescued and rehabbed a lot of great pyrs, she had 14 rescues at one time but over the years she slowed down and really doesnt rescue any more and she recently lost her last pyr that was 13 years old.but she watches the rural shelters in case any come in and wants to make sure they all get out to safety..these two were at the brazoria county sheriffs office, a very nice little shelter, but they are right next to the local prison and they do not adopt to the public, rescues only can take and they are always full tammy that runs the shelter is wonderful and tries to hold onto the dogs as long as she can but as all of the new ones flood in she is like all of the city shelters the long timers have to go. one way or the other and she sends out pleas on dogs that need to get out asap.. she sent a plea out on wens on the dogs that needed out by today.. these two were on the list.. my friend n.j (short for norma jean ) which she has never used had been in touch with tammy on the dogs and was so upset that no rescue was taking them ..there had been interest but no takers, she felt it was because they were a very bonded pair and the male was heart worm positive, and to treat a 87 lb dog for heart worms is really expensive even for a rescue.. so n.j. asked for my help.. did i know anyone else that could take them or could i help, so we formulated a plan, because if the great pry rescues were not going to take there was probably no one else that would take on such big dogs,so we decided that if no one took them the i would take them into the rescue and n.j. would foster them both until we could get them fully vetted, treated and hopefully find them a great home together..tammy called. no one was taking these beautiful creatures.so i drove down to the shelter this morning in some pretty foul weather.. it has rained for days here and the streets had flooded and we loaded them up in back of my suv with the help of fellow rescuer tom english who was at the shelter helping give all of the dogs their shots and nail trims !! and take photos for tammy to send out..and of course there was the cutest scruffy dog there that i just had some room for in the car and we squeezed him in and off we went to the vets veronica lake is the cream dog and she is 73 lbs and badger is the multi colored male dog he is 87 lbs.. and he wanted to ride on my lap on the way back into the city..that was interesting...both are incredibly sweet and just gorgeous dogs , so now i have two big fluffy shaggy dogs that will be needing new homes in a couple of months .. the saying thats what friends are for comes to mind right now..always happy to help a friend.. even with 2 huge dogs !!
