on behalf of the Centre for Applied Social Research (CeASR) and more specifically Prof. Alex Nunn I would like to express interest in participating in a proposal that will be submitted under the new PROGRESS call for proposals - European Sector Skills Councils (VP/2014/012). CeASR is an exciting new University-wide Research Centre and its aim is to deliver interdisciplinary research across the social sciences, initially in five research programmes. CeASR aims to meet the needs of external stakeholders for research with impact policy and practice problems and to infuse its curriculum with research-informed teaching. Prof. Nunn completed his undergraduate and post-graduate training at the University of Manchester, culminating in the completion of his PhD thesis on Crisis and the Political Economy of Global Governance, between 1995 and 2005. During his PhD studies he worked as a consultant and contract researcher for the Association of University Teachers (now UCU) and then went to work at the Centre for Public Services as Strategic Policy Advisor. At CPS he worked with Dexter Whitfield, advising trade unions and community groups on anti-privatisation strategies. In 2005 Alex moved to the Policy Research Institute at Leeds Met, where he progressed to Acting Director between 2008-9. While at PRI he led a wide range of applied social research and consultancy projects, mainly for UK government departments and some international organisations. During this time he raised in the region of £3m in research funding and undertook research projects that often had a significant impact on public policy and practice. In 2009 he moved to the then School of Applied Global Ethics as Subject Group Leader. Since then he has led on the International Relations and International Political Economy curriculum and continued to undertake funded research contracts. There are two broad strands to his research. The first focuses on political economy, governance and crisis as a turning point. This extends through his PhD and subsequent academic conference papers and publications. The second is related to the commissioned research projects he undertook while at the PRI, mainly in the areas of labour markets and labour market governance. This second stream has also incorporated several projects on social mobility. More recently Alex has tried to bring these two areas of interest together. For example he has published recently on the way that social mobility has occupied political and media debate in ways that are illustrative of particular approaches to political economy. He is currently also developing research to update the arguments in his PhD project about crisis and the restructuring of governance, with specific emphasis on different national responses and changes in the nature of governance at the European and global levels. leedsmet.ac.uk/research/centre-for-applied-social-research-ceasr.htm
