(part 6 ) THE ART OF ARTHUR 16/NOV/ 1914 There were other shows besides AFRICAN JAZZ and GOLDEN CITY DIXIES . Arthur was always the 1st one these promoters looked for. The man was bright and handy and could be usefull in any musical situation .I heard him play the beginning of Tjaikowskij and Edward Griegs.piano concertos when he sat alone and a few of Chopins works.Yet he could not read a single note . What bugs me mostly was the back talk concerning him. . I never heard anyone give him any credit .He never spoke badly about other people to me. Its so heart breaking: a woman came up to me and told me that a visiting pianist from South Africa turned his back on Arthur Gillies in Norway. Good Heavens ! I hope she she was wrong.This woman seemed very upset about it. But on the whole Arthur was loved by the audience when we were on tour.I remember the mini concerts after the shows. The manager of the golden city Dixies Mr Rabbie brought all his his friends back stage most evenings and requested Arthur to do interpretations of all kinds from ragtime to modern jazz and even classic music. Arthur did it out of kindness and with good intentions .I know there were a lot of jealousy but Arthur ignored all of it.The Dixies went to visit many towns Kimberly ,Pietemaritsburg. Bloemfontein ,Durban Johannesburg Port Elizabeth Pretoria ,Capetown and of course smaller towns as well. I think it was in Bloemfontein when the White boere policeman came to the bullring where we were camping over to sleep.There werent any hotels for non whites. These tall polismen came only to congratulate the boys for the great performance we did . They looked very happy and seemed to know some of our names and wanted to know if we needed anything like cigarettes and so on. One cat asked if their were any shebeens around. The policeman left and came back with a couple of bottles of wine and cigarettes .They apologized that they had to go away for a while on duty but will be back. It didnt take long before they were back. The wine was already finish. The guys wanted more to drink then they quickly left and came back with more wine and cigarettes. They kept on talking about the wonderful show and came back to see that show the following night again.
